It is critically important for all Nursing Staff to understand the future state of the profession. In order for us as a profession to grow, we must advance as a profession. The Institute of Medicine (IOM) has helped us all to prepare for the future.
Building our profession will help secure our foundation for improving health care in the United States. Nursing is a critical building block in helping improve our national health care standards and outcomes. We must look at the IOM recommendations in order to understand how important our role is in health care survival in the U.S.
Recommendation 1: Remove Scope-of-Practice Barriers
This is one of the most important recommendations! Nurses must be able to practice to the fullest scope of their practice. Advanced Practice Nurses need important legislative actions to allow them to provide care. Removing barriers will also help reduce the costs of health care by removing the costs of medical doctors from the mix.
Recommendation 4: Increase the proportion of RN's with a BSN to 80% by 2020
Evidence shows the BSN prepared nurse helps implement best practice standards with a greater buy-in for bedside practices. This allows for improved outcomes at the bed side. As a profession, we must advance our education to improve patient outcomes.
Recommendation 5: Double the number of Nurses with a Doctorate degree by 2020
Again, the doctoral prepared nurse brings research and new evidence to patient care. The doctoral nurse will improve patient outcomes, while teaching and motivating nursing staff at improving their practices.
